Biography

G. Kevin Spellman has managed research, people, portfolios, and operations in the investment management industry. He has engaged in research of public and private securities and has taught investment courses at the university level.

Kevin is the Director of Research (DOR) in the Domestic Equities department at the State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio (STRS Ohio), which manages over $50 billion for the teachers of Ohio. As DOR, he supervised a group of industry-specialized analysts (bottom-up research) and is currently performing top-down research (strategy, economics, accounting, quantitative analysis, etc.). He also manages operations (commissions, etc.) and is involved in corporate governance matters.

In his tenure at STRS Ohio, he managed various portfolios including those in the value, core, and growth disciplines. Earlier in his career he was an analyst following domestic (cyclical and growth industries), international (Latin America), and real estate securities (REITs).

In addition to researching public securities, he has experience analyzing private companies. At Madison Valuation Associates, Kevin assembled economic, industry, and company-specific information for the valuation of closely held businesses and with economic damage analysis for a variety of clients.

Kevin began teaching early in his career when he tutored accounting, economics, and finance at the undergraduate level. He is currently an Adjunct Professor at the Fisher College of Business at the Ohio State University, where he oversees graduate and undergraduate students that manage a portfolio for OSU’s endowment fund.

The course, The Stock Market: Advanced Investment Analysis, combines traditional academic objectives with the practical demands of hands-on investment management (with a focus on the institutional investor). The class is organized along the lines of top-down analysis: economics, capital markets, investment styles, sector/industry analysis, company analysis (business, financial, and valuation), trading, and performance evaluation. Ethics is also discussed throughout the class. Kevin’s favorite areas of research deal with the investment process, valuation, and style analysis.

He has guest lectured at numerous universities, serves as an Advisory Board Member to the University of Dayton’s Flyer Investments program, has been a judge at the RISE (Redefining Investment Strategy Education) Symposium, a national conference for student investment programs, and has spoken at various conferences.

Kevin earned his MS in Finance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he was enrolled in the leading investment program, the Applied Securities Analysis and Investment Management Program. He also has his CFA certification and is a member of the Association for Investment Management and Research.
